Two core components of the PHIRE solution have been independently assessed at the European level, confirming their strong innovation and market potential. The urine-stable targeted gold nanorods, developed as a clinical-grade medicinal product against bladder tumour markers, and the dedicated intravesical molecular imaging platform were evaluated by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) using its Market Creation Potential (MCP) indicator framework.

The results highlight the strength of the PHIRE approach:

The MCP framework assesses innovations developed under EU-funded projects based on criteria such as novelty, business readiness, market scalability and potential impact. Independent evaluation through this mechanism reinforces not only the scientific robustness of PHIRE, but also its commercial and translational relevance.

These recognitions position PHIRE among European innovations with strong potential to create new market opportunities in the field of advanced diagnostic imaging and precision oncology.

Recognition beyond the laboratory

The innovation was further highlighted in May 2025 during the European Week Against Cancer, where PHIRE was identified as pioneering work among EIC-supported initiatives.

In parallel, the scientific foundations of the technology have been documented in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, including PNAS and Advanced Healthcare Materials, confirming the robustness of both the imaging approach and the engineered nanomaterials.

The project has also attracted public attention beyond the research community. An Italian national broadcaster (TGCOM) featured PHIRE in a dedicated television report, underlining the societal relevance of technologies aimed at improving cancer detection and treatment.

From validation to translation

Independent evaluation of both the medicinal product component and the imaging device marks a significant milestone for PHIRE. It confirms that the solution is not only scientifically sound but also positioned for future clinical and market translation.

As PHIRE advances toward the next stages of development, these recognitions strengthen the pathway from laboratory innovation to real-world application in bladder cancer care.
